The name is loaned from an old ammunition factory in Pennsylvania that was -between 1816 and 1977- the epicentre of the development of ammunition for firearms. All kinds of ammunition were developed and produced there. The ammo plant was enormous, a city in itself. In the American Civil War and both the First and Second World War, Frankford Arsenal has contributed greatly. An interesting fact: during the American Civil War, the commander of Frankford Arsenal resigned and joined the Confederates by knocking on their door with a huge load of arms and ammunition that he took with him.
The Frankford Arsenal plant eventually closed, but the name continues as a homage to what is regarded as a legendary place in American history of arms and ammunition, where important developments have been made. Gunpowder was tested, time fuses were developed and many guns and ammunition were designed and tested. For instance; the Gatling was born there. We’ve come a long way since time fuses and muskets are long gone, but reloading is still as relevant as ever. And the link with Frankford Arsenal is clear: developing and making your own ammunition.
